It’s hard to imagine most kids embracing a strict vegan diet by choice, but according to an article by dietician Timi Gustafson, veganism is becoming a more popular lifestyle among adults - many of whom wish to pass on the no animal product diet to their children. Stricter than traditional vegetarianism, such a diet excludes all animals (including fish) as well as any animal byproducts, such as eggs and dairy.
Adequate nutrition intake is the biggest concern when deciding to allow one’s children to adopt such a strict diet. Most of the proteins that are essential to our health are found in products that vegans won’t eat.
In recent years, cases in which young children and babies were irrevocably harmed by having such diets forced on them by their parents have made big headlines across the world. Gustafson makes sure to point out, however, that because infants and toddlers are undergoing rapid growth and development, “no dietary restrictions should be applied under the age of two.”
Although cases in which children starve on a vegan diet are tragic, Gustafson, rightly notes that many children on non vegan diets fail to consume the recommended daily amount of vitamins and nutrients regardless of the abundance of food options available to them.
A steady stream of processed foods in our society is limiting our access to important vitamins and minerals. In short, we should not take for granted that our children are nutritionally sound - as it is still possible not to take in the right proportions of vegetables, proteins and dairy products on non restricted diets as well.
Although some diets (such as a vegan) may be untraditional, parents need to ensure that however they are feeding their kids, they are consuming adequate amounts vitamin B, iodine and the essential Omega-3 fatty acids.
Anlit Advanced Nutrition Supplements is expanding its presence in the European market.
Anlit is currently in advanced negotiations with potential business partners in Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and Russia, who are interested in selling Anlit’s vitamins, minerals and dietary supplements for children under their own brand names.
As part of the company’s efforts, Anlit’s management will meet with potential clients at the Vitafoods Europe 2012 trade show, which will take place May 22–24, 2012 in Geneva, Switzerland. Anlit will showcase new and existing products at the FPE Finished Products Expo at Stand 3500.

The Omega 3 DHA + EPA fishes, which are free of preservatives, gluten and trans fats, are packaged safely in individually sealed blisters to ensure prolonged stability. The product is a collaboration between Anlit and Ocean Nutrition, which was acquired last week for $540 million by Dutch multi-national company DSM. It is based on Anlit’s proprietary blister bear and Ocean Nutrition’s Omega 3 oil.
Anlit recently signed new partnerships with companies in Poland and Finland in line with the company’s strategy of strengthening its European network.

The Sweet Dreams supplement is shaped like a small teddy bear and tastes like vanilla yogurt. The supplement uses a milk-based derivative called lactium, developed by French company Ingredia Nutritional.
The Tasting Bar is one of the main attractions at FPE and this year many exciting products will be presented including dietetic products, sport drinks and nutritional supplements.
Vitafoods Europe, and the co-located Finished Products Expo, is expected to attract more than 10,000 attendees. Participants include hundreds of ingredient suppliers, dietary supplement manufacturers and equipment and service providers along with thousands of industry experts.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have released a new report claiming that 25 percent of American children between the ages of 1 and 11 are Vitamin D deficient.
Once thought of as the “sun” vitamin, today’s kids are getting far less Vitamin D from natural sunlight than in the past as concerns about the danger of sun exposure have grown. Most doctors recommend that children spend no longer than 15 minutes in the sun today without some sort of protection. Although these recommendations will hopefully keep our kids safe from the ultra violet rays that cause skin cancer - they are negatively impacting their Vitamin D intake.
In recent years, a slew of studies has shown that Vitamin D is important to our immune system, can help in the prevention of childhood diabetes and cancer and has been linked to preventing stress fractures in adolescents. Even without using the sun as a primary source, Vitamin D is found in a number of foods including fortified milk and cheese products, tuna, salmon, eggs and fortified orange juices and cereals.
According to Andrew Calabria, M.D., pediatric endocrinologist at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, however, certain higher risk children will require additional supplementation. Those at greater risk for Vitamin D Deficiency include dark-skinned children, overweight children, and exclusively breastfed infants.
Given how easy it is to intake Vitamin D today, it is both alarming and unnecessary for a full 25% of young American kids to be deficient. Hopefully as parents become more aware of the vitamin’s importance and the various options for consuming it, we can keep our kids healthy!
